The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has clarified that it conducted a partial demolition of a storey building located on Oladele Odusanya Street, off Ademulegun Street, Ireakari Estate, Oshodi-Isolo, after residents consistently ignored safety warnings issued over several months.
This clarification comes in response to public speculation regarding the enforcement action.
In a statement released on Monday and signed by the Director of Public Affairs, Adu Ademuyiwa, LASBCA noted that the structure had been under continuous surveillance due to indications of significant structural distress.
The agency reported that engineers initially raised concerns following an inspection on March 3, 2025, which determined that the building posed a serious risk to its occupants and neighboring properties.
Consequently, evacuation notices were issued, followed by multiple reminders.
The statement highlighted that one of the main defects identified was a broken water pipe that continuously soaked the building’s primary support columns, gradually undermining their strength and overall stability.
LASBCA indicated that despite numerous evacuation notices and follow-up engagements over the course of about nine months, occupants did not comply with directives to vacate the premises.
The agency emphasized that the warnings aimed to prevent possible loss of life and property, in alignment with the Lagos State Government’s proactive approach to enforcing building safety regulations.
It further stated that the decision to partially demolish the structure was made only after the building’s condition worsened and all attempts to encourage voluntary compliance were unsuccessful.
“The partial demolition became unavoidable as the risk level increased and residents continued to disregard evacuation orders, leaving the agency with no choice but to act in the interest of public safety,” the statement remarked.
LASBCA also revealed that all statutory notices, engineering reports, and photographic evidence of the building’s compromised condition were meticulously documented to demonstrate adherence to due process.
The agency reaffirmed its dedication to safeguarding lives and property and urged residents throughout Lagos State to promptly comply with safety and evacuation directives, cautioning that ignoring such notices could lead to preventable disasters.
What prompted the partial demolition of the building?
The partial demolition was prompted by the continuous disregard of safety warnings by residents and the building's significant structural distress, which posed serious risks to its occupants and neighboring properties.
How long were residents given to evacuate the building?
Residents were given multiple evacuation notices and reminders over a period of approximately nine months to vacate the premises.
What safety measures does LASBCA enforce?
LASBCA enforces safety measures aimed at preventing loss of life and property by conducting inspections, issuing evacuation notices, and taking necessary actions, such as demolition, when buildings are deemed unsafe.
