The Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Internal Revenue Service (KW-IRS), Shade Omoniyi, announced that the Kwara State government has achieved remarkable year-on-year growth in internally generated revenue from 2023 to 2024, positioning it as the fifth least dependent state on federally distributed revenue.

She made this announcement during the grand finale of the 2025 KW-IRS Tax Club Quiz Competition, which took place at the Ilorin Innovation Hub in the state capital.

The chairman of the state IRS emphasized the agency's dedication to establishing a fair, transparent, and efficient tax system that promotes public trust and compliance.

Omoniyi referenced the BudgIT 2025 State of States Report, which ranked Kwara third in the nation for sub-national fiscal performance, an improvement from 10th place in 2021 and fourth in 2023.

“Kwara has also recorded a 36 percent year-on-year increase in internally generated revenue between 2023 and 2024, making it the fifth least dependent state on federally distributed revenue,” she noted.

According to Omoniyi, the state government has approved the formation of a stakeholders’ committee to review and streamline all taxes, levies, rates, and charges collected as revenue within the state.

She stated that the state is preparing to align with the newly enacted national tax framework and the proposed Taxes and Levies (Approved List for Collection) Bill 2025.

This initiative, the agency's chairman explained, aims to enhance the legal and operational framework of the state’s tax system, ensuring fairness and building citizens’ confidence in tax administration.

In the quiz competition, Shepherd School from Lafiagi was declared the overall winner with 20 points, while Government Secondary School, Lafiagi, and St. Anthony’s Secondary School, Ilorin, secured the second and third positions, respectively.

The top three schools were awarded cash prizes of N2.5 million, N1.5 million, and N1 million, along with consolation prizes for other participants.
