This week, the political landscape of Taraba State underwent a significant change as Governor Dr. Kefas Agbu transitioned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This decision has sparked considerable discussion among residents and political analysts.
Critics argue that the governor is pursuing enhanced political influence; however, APC State Chairman Ibrahim Tukur El-Suldi has rejected these assertions, emphasizing that the defection should be seen as a catalyst for improved governance.
During a statement made on Sunday in Jalingo regarding this development, El-Suldi remarked that Governor Agbu’s decision offers “an opportunity for positive administrative transformation,” expressing his expectation that the governor will perform more effectively under the APC platform.
“Contrary to the popular belief that the governor’s performance was lackluster while in the PDP, I firmly believe he will excel with the APC,” he stated. “If he once had PDP affiliations, joining APC, a progressive party, will allow us to instill our progressive ideology and values in him. I assure you, he will embrace change and provide even better governance.”
In response to worries about potential restructuring of party leadership to accommodate the governor’s supporters, El-Suldi clarified that the APC's existing structure will remain intact until the current tenure concludes in March 2026.
“From the state level down to the ward level, the structure will remain unchanged until the official schedule for congresses is announced,” he explained. “That will be the right moment for the governor and other new members to form alliances and fully integrate into the party.”
El-Suldi also emphasized that, despite the presence of diverse interests within the party, the APC remains stable and united.
“We have our internal competitions, but that’s the essence of democracy. What matters is that the APC remains one strong and cohesive family,” he stated.
Addressing rumors that Governor Agbu might receive an automatic ticket for future elections, the chairman refuted the notion, reaffirming the party’s dedication to fairness and internal democracy.
“The APC is a democratic and progressive party that champions equality among its members. Every candidate, including Governor Kefas Agbu, will undergo the same transparent process. There will be no special or preferential treatment for anyone,” he assured.
El-Suldi expressed hope that the governor’s transition to the APC will enhance governance in Taraba State and further the party’s vision of progress and unity.
