Kano govt vows crackdown on drug theft in public health facilities

Published on May 16, 2025 at 06:12 AM

The Kano State Government has issued a stern warning to health workers against the diversion of medical equipment and drugs, vowing to take decisive action against anyone found guilty of such practices.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by his Deputy, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, gave the warning during the official flag-off ceremony for the distribution of health intervention commodities across the state.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to equipping health facilities with essential medical supplies, emphasizing that all the distributed commodities—targeting seven categories of diseases—must be given to patients free of charge.

“We will not tolerate the diversion or misuse of these life-saving materials. Any health worker caught in such acts will face the full weight of the law,”;; the governor declared.

The warning comes amid the launch of major interventions that include dental chairs, school health services, free eye spectacles, free sickle cell medication, diabetic screening kits, and maternal health packs—all under the state’s “Abba Gida-Gida”;; initiative.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, noted that the interventions aim to support vulnerable populations and align with the government’s broader health policy. He also highlighted achievements such as the renovation of 260 health facilities and improved routine immunization efforts across the state.

The Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammad Sanusi II, represented by Alhaji Muhammad Aminu Yusuf, and ALGON Chairperson Hajiya Sa’adatu Yusuf Soja, both commended the government’s efforts, pledging full support from traditional institutions and local governments to ensure the success of health sector reforms.
