WHAT a historic night for England.

The Three Lions collected in some of the most difficult circumstances possible to book their place in the quarter-finals.

The deck was stacked against from the get-go. They were facing a side that had won all four of their games at this World Cup and hadn’t conceded a goal.

That same team was playing on home soil at the Azteca Stadium, a venue that is over 2,200 feet above sea level with major altitude problems for any visiting team.

That same location had only seen Mexico lose TWICE in 57 years prior to England’s legendary victory also happened to be the site of ‘s infamous ‘Hand of God’ debacle – also against England.

But ‘s troops banished those demons with a 3-2 victory against the co-hosts thanks to – scored within 97 seconds of each other – and a penalty.

Bellingham actually became the first person to score a double in a World Cup game at the Azteca since Diego Maradona did in the semi-final back in 1986 – not bad company.

But there is so much more to this match-up than just the scoreline.

The game was on a knife edge anyway with the tense atmosphere inside the partisan, 80,000-seater stadium. But at the start of the second half pushed things up a level.

The former Liverpool man flew into a tackle which, at first glance, looked like a clean solid challenge.

But the replays showed the defender followed through high with his studs up and was always going to send him off.

At first, play was allowed to continue leaving the Mexican bench absolutely enraged.

Both benches collided on the touchline before the referee got a hold on proceedings, but

He said on BBC : “It’s all going off on the touchline, they’re scrapping, they’re punching, they’re doing whatever because the Mexican bench they think it was a terrible tackle from Quansah.”

The benches weren’t done, either. Jordan Henderson ended up recieving a booking without ever actually getting on the pitch.

The man put his two cents in when England and Mexico players started going at it again over a throw- in with just a few minutes remaining.

The referee gave him a yellow card for interfering and things would get much worse for the 36-year-old.

Once England secured a historic victory with some heroic rearguard action – led by ‘s command of his area and ‘s valiant clearances – skipper began.

The cult classic has become the defacto England theme of this World Cup and it has become mandatory for the players to sing it with the fans after victories.

Once the celebration was over, Henderson was seen jumping over the advertising board and losing his footing. Tuchel confirmed in an interview after the match that and he was seen being stretchered away with gas and air.

He wasn’t the only player to suffer a bad injury either – the game was actually 10 versus 10 for the final few minutes after Mexico sub Santi Gimenez suffered a horror ankle injury and simply had to be rolled off the pitch as his team searched for an equaliser.

Both men are in hospital in Mexico City – Henderson has missed the flight back with the England squad as one of the medical team remains by his side.

In the midst of the celebrations,

Despite the obvious concern for Henderson from the elated Three Lions stars, Kane still hilariously tried to give an interview with next to no voice left.

Fans were left thinking Micky Mouse had taken the microphone!

Kane ended up the hero – and was showered in beer from furious Mexican fans in the process – but he nearly had his moment as the villain when he gave away a penalty to let Mexico back into the game.

Raul Jimenez scored after Kane cleared the ball, but he appeared to kick through the Mexican forward’s foot first. It divided opinion with Alan Shearer infuriated at the idea it was a penalty while the studio panel – led by – believed that it was.

Tuchel, certainly did not: “It’s just not good enough. Referees are just not good enough. Fourth officials are just not good enough.

“It’s the bottom line. Is this a clear and obvious mistake for the [Mexico] penalty? For sure not, but VAR gets involved.

“They overturn a situation where he doesn’t even give a foul. Not good enough.”

As Kane tried to say, it was a ‘crazy game’ that will live long in World Cup lore as well as Three Lions hearts.

England fans had to stay up for a 1am kick-off – which was delayed to 2am – but they still stayed in in the morning in what is surely a terrible sign for the Englisheconomyy today.

Wembley BOXPARK was rammed as always and every fan will no doubt be delighted to have stayed up to watch the classic that unfolded.
