He tweeted: “Wish the parents would pay for me to have sky in my room, freeview is soul destroying at this time of night.”

The stopper was just 18-years-old at the time and was preparing to embark on a loan move to Darlington from .

It’s safe to say Pickford doesn’t rely on freeview anymore – or his parents money.

He reportedly earns £110k-a-week at and the club paid £30m for him back in 2017.

After a slow start that saw some mistakes against and then Congo, Pickford has been back to his reliable best for England.

The 32-year-old was at his best during England’s instant classic against that saw the Three Lions advance to the quarter-finals amid a host of obstacles.

England now face in the semi-finals of the World Cup where they will face either or , should they win.

Pickford will come up against, quite possibly, the greatest player to ever play the game when he tries to keep out for the first time in Atlanta on Wednesday.

But the Toffees star insists he cannot only be concerned with the 39-year-old.

He said: “He’s scored so many goals and he’s contributed to so many goals well over his career, and it’s great to be able to finally come up against him after so long, from watching him as a kid,” said Pickford.

“But we all know how good Messi is, but we also know how good Argentina is. So [they] can’t just solely rely on Messi. We’ve got to focus on their other strengths as well, and their other weaknesses we can take advantage of.

“I’ve watched bits [of Argentina’s matches]. We all know how good Messi is, but we also know how hardworking a team they are. It’s about us England being prepared for Argentina and that’s what we’ll do.”
