The Anambra State Police Command has reported a notable decline in violent crimes, including kidnapping, armed robbery, and cult-related incidents, throughout the year 2025, according to the Commissioner of Police.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Ikioye Orutugu, made this statement while speaking to journalists at the Police Command Headquarters in Awka on Tuesday.

CP Orutugu stated that these accomplishments were achieved through proactive policing, intelligence-driven operations, quicker response times, increased visibility during patrols, and strong collaborations with the community.

He remarked, “Despite variations in crime trends influenced by socio-economic factors and changing security dynamics across the nation, the Command successfully disrupted numerous kidnapping syndicates in various local government areas, dismantled criminal hideouts and hotspots, bolstered community policing initiatives, and enhanced inter-agency cooperation.”

“These initiatives ensured that major events in the state occurred without incident, including the official visit from the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the execution of the governorship and local government elections, and the gradual return to normal social activities in Ihiala, where social events can now take place without fear.”

CP Orutugu revealed that through collaborative operations involving the Police, DSS, Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy, NSCDC, Nigeria Immigration Service, Agunaechemba, and other security personnel, the Command successfully rescued 35 kidnapping victims, apprehended over 300 suspects linked to serious crimes, seized more than 2,000 firearms and ammunition, including explosives, and recovered over 60 stolen vehicles and motorcycles.

He added that numerous cases have been effectively prosecuted, resulting in convictions.

He pointed out the re-arrest of suspects, including the gang leader involved in the murder of the late Hon. Justice Azuka in Onitsha, as well as the apprehension of suspects responsible for the deaths of three Cameroonian nationals, whose bodies were also recovered.

The Commissioner acknowledged challenges such as the evolution of criminal tactics and occasional public resistance or misinformation, but stated that these challenges would guide the development of improved strategies in the upcoming year.

With the festive season approaching, CP Orutugu announced the implementation of comprehensive security measures and cautioned that the use of knock-out substances and other social explosives remains strictly prohibited.

He urged residents to stay vigilant, adhere to traffic regulations, secure their homes, and utilize only designated motor parks.

He expressed gratitude to the Anambra State Government, fellow security agencies, traditional and religious leaders, community groups, the media, and Ndi Anambra for their support in enhancing several police facilities across the state.

The Commissioner reaffirmed the Command’s dedication to ensuring a safer Anambra State and wished residents a peaceful Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
