In response to ongoing terrorist attacks, the Obaro of Kabba and Chairman of the Kabba/Bunu Traditional Council, Oba Solomon Owoniyi, in partnership with the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State, has mandated the suspension of all church activities in the region until further notice.
The directive was prompted by recent assaults on churches, the seizure of a significant stockpile of arms and ammunition by security forces in the state, and a series of security incidents within the community.
The Coordinator of CAN in Kabba/Bunu LGA, Rev. Kayode Osatuyi, clarified in a notice on Friday that this decision was made during a meeting held at the monarch’s palace with traditional leaders and church representatives.
The notice indicated that, following the directive from Oba Solomon Owoniyi, the gathering of traditional leaders and church representatives of CAN Kabba/Bunu LGA led to the closure of all church services until further notice, based on reliable security intelligence regarding attacks on churches by bandits.
Osatuyi stated, “The directive was issued after consultations with the state leadership of CAN, urging all churches in the area to comply for the sake of public safety.”
He also called for ongoing prayers for peace in Kabba/Bunu land, adding that churches would be notified when it is safe to resume activities.
Recently, the Kogi State Government announced the discovery of a large cache of weapons and ammunition from criminal hideouts following a joint security operation throughout various parts of the state.
Consequently, the government has advised places of worship, particularly those situated on the outskirts of towns, to reconsider holding services in areas prone to crime in light of recent attacks on churches.
Last month, a Cherubim and Seraphim Church was targeted in the area, and on Sunday, the Evangelical Church Winning All in Kiri was attacked, resulting in the reported deaths of two worshippers.
