The Yobe State Police Command has raised the alarm over the increasing cases of cybercrime and internet-related offences across all 17 Local Government Areas of the state.

The concern was raised by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, during a one-day Cybersecurity Symposium held in Damaturu.

SP Abdulkarim disclosed that the command has recorded six major cybercrime cases in the last five months, many of which involved attempts to damage the reputations of individuals, particularly political and business figures.

“Over the past year, we have dealt with numerous cases involving cybercrime. Many of these attacks are directed at tarnishing the images of political figures, businesspeople, and other individuals,”;; he said.

According to him, the trend indicates a disturbing spread of cybercrime activities across the state, with several of the recorded cases currently being prosecuted in court.

The police spokesperson also advised the public, especially social media users, to exercise caution in their online engagements and take proactive measures to secure their digital accounts.

“We are urging citizens to activate two-factor authentication on all their accounts. It is a critical safeguard against hackers and online criminals who exploit weak security to cause harm,”;; he warned.

The event, themed “Contemporary Challenges and Solutions,”;; was organised by the Office of theSpecial Adviser on Policy Delivery to the Yobe State Government in collaboration with the Office of the State Focal Person on Cyber and Information Technology.
