UCL, Europa League: Wenger urges UEFA to review qualification rules

Published on May 05, 2025 at 04:42 PM

Legendary Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger has called on UEFA to ‘review’ Champions League qualification rules ahead of a possible Europa League final between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur later this month.

The 2025 Europa League final looks set to be an all-English clash between the Red Devils and Spurs.

Man United and Tottenham are occupying the bottom-half of the Premier League table at the moment.

Ruben Amorim’s side had defeated Athletic Bilbao 3-0 in the Europa League semi-final first leg last Thursday, while Tottenham defeated Bodo-Glimt 3-1 to put one foot in the Europa League final which will take place on May 21.

The winner of the Europa League this season will get an automatic qualify for next season’s Champions League under UEFA rule, but Wenger disagrees with the policy.

Asked if it was ‘right’ for the winners of the Europa League to qualify for the Champions League, Wenger told beIN SPORTS: “No – they should qualify automatically for the Europa League again but not necessarily for the Champions League.

“Especially when you are in the Premier League where already five teams qualify. I think it’s something [for UEFA] to think about and to review.”;
