As the Senate is set to resume plenary on Tuesday, 6th May 2025, following the Sallah and Easter breaks, the Leader of the 10th Senate, Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, has stated that tax reform bills and the crisis in Rivers State will top the legislative agenda.
He said the passage of the four tax reform bills has become imperative, as they aim to overhaul the country’s tax regime and increase the federation’s revenue. This, he noted, would enable governments at all levels to execute projects and deliver dividends of democracy.
Opeyemi further revealed that the Red Chamber would collaborate with the executive arm to resolve political impasses across the country, particularly the ongoing political crisis in Rivers to ensure peace in the oil-rich state.
In a statement issued by his media office and made available to journalists on Tuesday in Abuja, the Senate leader expressed concern over the recent resurgence of insecurity in various parts of the federation, particularly in Benue, Borno, Katsina, and Plateau states.
Part of the statement read: “As the foremost democratic institution that makes laws for the peace, order and good government of the Federation, the Senate will speed engagement with key actors in the security sector and come up with mechanisms for the effective management of national security. We are committed to putting an end to all acts of terrorism across the federation.”;
He gave assurances that the Constitution Review Committee, chaired by the Deputy Senate President, Senator Jibrin Barau, would expedite its work to ensure timely completion of its processes.
“Finally, we have bills of strategic national interest that are pending before the Senate on different sectors of the economy. There is an urgent need to consider those bills and ensure their passage expeditiously.
“We will also encourage our special and standing committees to put in place public hearings that will give us the opportunity to engage with the electorate on various aspects of law-making and give their own inputs,”; he said.
