Stop new terrorist groups now – Anglican Bishop tells Nigerian Govt

Published on May 03, 2025 at 05:26 AM

The Anglican Bishop of Umuahia, Bishop Geoffrey Ibeabuchi, has raised the alarm about the worsening security situation in the country, lamenting that bandits are sacking villagers from homes and farms, thereby increasing the number of Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs.

This is even as advised the Federal government to mandate security agencies to urgently halt the rise of new terrorist groups in indifferent parts of the country.

Bishop Ibeabuchi made the call at St. Stephen’s Cathedral Umuahia on Friday while delivering his Presidential Address at the 2nd Session of the 11th Synod.

He said that the attacks on military barracks, influx of illegal arms, extortion of citizens at security checkpoints are currently exposing more Nigerian citizens to increased danger.

“No place in Nigeria is safe, not even military barracks. Drastic and urgent actions by security agencies should be taken to halt the rise of new terrorist groups in Nigeria,”; he said.

The Bishop also made a humanitarian appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to release of detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, arguing that releasing Kanu could help in exposing those destroying lives and property in the South East with his name.

Ibeabuchi decried the high level of poverty in the country, declaring that the Federal government’s failure to implement petrol subsidy removal palliatives had further increased hardship on the people.

He further commended Governor Alex Otti of Abia State on his achievements in office so far, but cautioned him against allowing sycophants to derail his administration’s programmes in the State.
