N80bn fraud: Why call for suspension of Nigeria’s SGF Akume, needless – Northern coalition

Published on May 19, 2025 at 06:53 PM

A northern coalition of advocacy groups has explained why the call for the probe and suspension of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Senator George Akume, is unnecessary and politically motivated.

This clarification was made in a statement on Monday by activist and national coordinator of the coalition, Prince Miaphen.

The coalition’s defense of Akume comes amid calls for the SGF to step down over allegations that he obstructed an N80 billion fraud investigation involving one of his aides, Torhile Uchi.

However, Miaphen described the allegation as unfounded and aimed at distracting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

A northern advocacy group aligned with the Renewed Hope Agenda condemned the calls for Akume’s suspension, describing the allegations as baseless and politically driven.

“These are orchestrated moves by political saboteurs who fear the success of President Tinubu’s administration.

“We pass a strong vote of confidence in Senator Akume and thank President Tinubu for standing by a man of principle and competence. Nigerians must remain united and not be swayed by false narratives,”;; Miaphen stated.

Recall that a group known as the Arewa United Patriots had called for Akume’s suspension over claims that he obstructed a fraud investigation.

Meanwhile, as of the time of filing this report, neither the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) nor the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has commented officially on the matter.
