The upcoming Netflix drama “Dear Hongrang”; has offered a glimpse into its captivating costume design!

“Dear Hongrang”; is a historical mystery romance that follows Hong Rang (Lee Jae Wook), the long-lost son of Joseon’s largest merchant guild, who returns after 12 years with no memory of his past. As his half-sister Jae Yi (Jo Bo Ah), who spent years desperately searching for him, becomes the only one to question his true identity, an inexplicable emotional bond starts to form between them.

One of the drama’s standout features is its immersive production design, particularly the intricately crafted hanbok (traditional Korean clothing) that reflects each character’s personality and emotional journey.

Hong Rang, shrouded in mystery upon his return, is frequently seen in white hanbok—whether within the merchant guild or in scenes with Jae Yi. This subtle costume choice amplifies his air of mystery and detachment, reflecting his lost memories and uncertain identity. Lee Jae Wook explained, “Hong Rang wears a lot of white, but each one is a different shade. The costumes were so detailed that working on ‘Dear Hongrang’ made me truly appreciate the beauty of hanbok.”;

Jae Yi—who has lived under strict social restraints—wears calm, muted tones. In contrast, Min Yeon Ui (Uhm Ji Won), the ambitious matriarch of the guild, is dressed in vibrant colors, rich patterns, and lavish accessories, visually highlighting her commanding presence and inner ambition and contrasting her sharply with Jae Yi.

Jo Bo Ah added, “The outfits were so thoughtfully designed that you could sense the characters’ personalities just by looking at what they wore. Thanks to the wardrobe, I was able to express more layers of my character.”;

The wardrobe further brings depth to supporting characters as well. Mu Jin (Jung Ga Ram), the adopted son of the guild, and Sim Yeol Guk (Park Byung Eun), its commanding head, are outfitted in stately attire that emphasizes their gravitas and status. Meanwhile, Grand Prince Han Pyeong (Kim Jae Wook), a royal known for his refined artistic eye, dons vividly colored hanbok that reflect his aesthetic sensibilities as a painter admired for his exceptional taste.
