The Lagos State House of Assembly has enjoined the Commissioner of Police in the State, Jimoh Moshood and the head of other security agencies to curtail what it described as incessant extortion of Lagosians by miscreants.
The Assembly made this declaration during its plenary held on Tuesday.
The Assembly said it was worried by the scourge of brazen extortion by miscreants on Lagos streets.
In a statement made available to DAILY POST, it said that extortion of members of the public in the state has increased.
The Assembly noted that it took the decision sequel to a motion moved by Hon. Sanni Okanlawon (representing Kosofe Constituency 1) who raised the alarm at the plenary on Tuesday.
Okanlawon in the motion titled “Matter of Urgent Public Importance'”; said that the unlawful extortion of stranded and innocent motorists by miscreants remains a growing concern that demands urgent attention in the state.
He lamented that “Nobody on the streets of Lagos is immune to their activities. If left unchecked, they could render the state unsafe.”;
Another lawmaker, Hon. Kehinde Joseph (Alimosho Constituency II) while speaking, noted that extortion of Lagosians is a threat to safety and sanity of road transportation in the state.
Similarly, Hon. Desmond Elliot (Surulere Constituency 1) in his own contribution, emphasised the need for active surveillance by security agencies.
Hon. Aro Moshood (Ikorodu Constituency II) while making his contribution, urged the Commissioner of Police to set up a tactical team dedicated mainly to road monitoring.
Hon. Adebola Shabi (Lagos Mainland Constituency 2) called for installation of CCTV cameras at identified black spots.
Speaker of the Assembly, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa while addressing the lawmakers, called on the police and other security agencies, including the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC), to collaborate.
He added that this will help to ensure that the state remains safe for residents, commuters and visitors at all times.
The assembly after its deliberations then unanimously called on the CP and head of other security agencies to intensify intelligence gathering.
It also charged them to increase surveillance on black spots across the metropolis.
