China clears air on spying allegations involving German far-right lawmaker’s aide

Published on April 30, 2025 at 12:59 PM

China on Wednesday rejected allegations that it employed an aide to a far-right German lawmaker, a day after the man was formally charged with spying for Chinese intelligence services.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Guo Jiakun told reporters in Beijing that claims of a Chinese espionage threat were “fictitious and malicious.”;

His remarks followed the announcement by German prosecutors on Tuesday that a man identified as Jian G., a German citizen and aide to European Parliament lawmaker Maximilian Krah of the far-right Alternative for Germany, AfD, party, had passed sensitive information to a Chinese intelligence agency.

Jian was arrested in April 2024 in the eastern city of Dresden. Authorities alleged he obtained more than 500 documents, some classified as particularly sensitive by the European Parliament.

He is also accused of surveilling Chinese dissidents living in Germany.

Following his arrest, German authorities searched the offices of both Jian G. and Maximilian Krah in the European Parliament building in Brussels.

Guo urged Germany to stop “slandering”; China and emphasised the importance of maintaining what he called the “good momentum”; in bilateral relations.

He added that China had always adhered to the principle of mutual respect in its foreign relations, NAN reports.
