CAN urges probe into use of religion for criminal acts after Gombe easter tragedy

Published on May 11, 2025 at 08:30 PM

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently investigate and address the growing misuse of religion for criminal activities in the country, following a tragic hit-and-run incident during the Easter celebration in Billiri Local Government Area of Gombe State.

CAN’s Vice President, Rev. Dr. Panya Baba, condemned the act, describing it as a devastating blow to the affected families and the Christian community. He stressed the urgent need for the federal government to identify and bring to justice individuals who exploit religious identities—whether Christian or Muslim—for violent or unlawful acts that threaten peace and unity.

Six people lost their lives and several others sustained serious injuries in the incident, which has left a lasting impact on the Billiri community. During a visit to the victims receiving treatment at the State Specialist Hospital and Federal Teaching Hospital in Gombe, the extent of the injuries was described as harrowing.

Rev. Baba commended the Gombe State Government for its swift response in providing medical care to the victims and initiating legal action against the suspect behind the incident.

He urged Christians across the state and the nation to remain calm, law-abiding, and trust in the government’s ability to deliver justice.

CAN reaffirmed its commitment to peace and called on authorities to ensure that religion is never used as a cover for violence or criminality.
