Residents of Birnin Kebbi and surrounding communities have been thrown into darkness following a sudden disruption in power supply caused by the collapse of three transmission towers near Yauri town in Kebbi State.
The incident, which occurred overthe weekend, has plunged parts of the state capital and other affected areas into darkness, sparking concern among residents and businesses that rely on electricity for daily operations.
In a statement onMonday, Abdulazeez Abdullahi, Head of Corporate Communication at the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KADECO), confirmed that the collapse of the towers has significantly disrupted power flow to the region.
“We regret to inform you of the current epileptic power supply in your areas. This is due to the unfortunate incident involving the collapse of three (3) transmission towers near Yauri town,”;; the statement read in part.
DAILY POST gathered that since the incident, power supply in Birnin Kebbi has become highly unstable, with entire neighborhoods experiencing long hours of blackout.
Speaking to our correspondent, Malam Idris Suleiman, a trader in the Bayan Kara area of the capital, said the blackout is already affecting his cold drink business.
“This is a serious problem for us. We were not even informed on time. My freezer has been off sinceSundaymorning, and I’m already counting losses,”;; he lamented.
Another resident, Hadiza Usman, expressed concern over the safety of residents.
“There was a rumour that a loud sound was heard around the Yauri axis before the blackout. We are scared because this is unusual. The government must act fast,”;; she said.
Although the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has mobilised contractors to begin the re-erection of the fallen towers, Kaduna Electric says it is currently rationing limited supply from the Kaduna axis to keep critical infrastructure running.
“We are hopeful that the work will be completed as soon as possible,”;; the company stated.
Meanwhile, residents and community leaders in affected Kebbi areas are calling on both the state and the federal governments to intervene urgently to prevent further hardship, especially as the temperature in the state continues to rise.
