APC has no intention of making Nigeria one-party state – Felix Morka

Published on May 15, 2025 at 11:36 AM

The National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Felix Morka, has said the ruling party has no intention of turning Nigeria into a one-party state.

Speaking on Arise Television’s ‘The Morning Show’ on Thursday, Morka addressed the sudden wave of defections from opposition party members to the APC clarifying that these moves does not mean the ruling party wants a one-party system.

He pointed out that when the Peoples Democratic Party PDP was in power, it governed over 28 states without facing similar accusations of trying to establish a one party state.

Morka emphasized that there is nothing wrong with members of the PDP or Labour Party choosing to join the APC if they align with the ruling party’s values and governance approach.

“Many of these people are coming in and saying, we want to be part of the process. We want to identify with that process.

“There’s nothing wrong with that, and it certainly doesn’t mean we want Nigeria to become a one-party state,”;; said Felix Morka.

He emphasized that Nigeria is inherently a pluralist nation, and the APC has no intention of violating the Constitution by attempting to establish a one-party system. Morka noted that achieving such a change would require a constitutional amendment—something he described as “nearly impossible.”;;

“Our Constitution, the Electoral Act, and several other laws clearly establish Nigeria as a multi-party and pluralist society. As a party, we cannot go against the Constitution’s framework to push for a one-party state. That would require significant changes, which are extremely difficult to achieve,”;; he explained.

Morka dismissed claims of a one-party agenda, stating that the APC’s main concern is safeguarding its position and continuing to strengthen its internal structures.
