- Appeal to President Tinubu
The Igbo communities in Canada have urged President Bola Tinubu to mandate the immediate and unconditional release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
The groups emphasized the urgency of this request due to the deteriorating health of Nnamdi Kanu and the alarming levels of insecurity in the Southeast region.
In a statement signed by Chief Dr. Anicetus Nwizundu (Okanga Ogadagidi), President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Canada, the group expressed profound concern regarding Kanu’s ongoing detention by the Department of State Services (DSS) for over four years, despite numerous appeals for his release.
“We, the Igbo people residing in Canada, stand united in calling upon the Federal Government of Nigeria to compassionately intervene in this matter and facilitate the unconditional release of our brother, Nnamdi Kanu,” the statement declared.
Nwizundu noted that Kanu’s health has severely declined, as confirmed by various medical professionals, including cardiologists who have assessed him during hospital visits. He cautioned that continued detention could jeopardize Kanu’s life.
“We urge the Federal Government to act swiftly to release him from custody before it is too late,” the statement implored.
The president also pointed out that Kanu’s imprisonment stems from his unwavering advocacy against the marginalization of the Igbo people in Nigeria. He emphasized that the Igbo community is not seeking conflict but rather fairness and justice within the Nigerian federation.
“The Igbo do not seek discord; they long for recognition, equality, and peace as Nigerians. Yet, they are treated as second-class citizens in their own nation,” the statement lamented.
Nwizundu further expressed concern about the escalating insecurity in the Southeast, describing the situation as “terrifying and disheartening.”
“There is no safety in Igboland today. One cannot travel without fear, nor sleep soundly at night due to the pervasive insecurity affecting various areas of our land,” he stated.
The group maintained that releasing Nnamdi Kanu would contribute to restoring peace and unity in the region, thereby fostering sustainable peace and development.
“With his release, we foresee the rectification of many injustices plaguing our homeland, paving the way for lasting peace,” Chief Nwizundu added.
The statement concluded with a plea to President Tinubu to exhibit compassion and statesmanship by ensuring Kanu’s freedom in the interest of national healing and unity.
