THE Golden Flake Tavern is now open at Fenwick Newcastle, and Greggs enthusiasts are thrilled.
When I first heard that Greggs was launching a pub, my immediate reaction was, “A Greggs sausage roll and a pint in one location? Count me in!”

What I didn't anticipate was a warm, traditional atmosphere paired with an impressive menu that could rival the best pubs.
Upon entering the tavern, I felt as if I had stepped back in time.
The space was adorned with local artwork, a jukebox, and inviting booths.
It was the small touches that truly made the pub feel genuine.
From branded Golden Flake coasters and napkins to a framed painting of Geordie legends,
The Golden Flake Tavern feels more like a local favorite than a pop-up establishment.
There was even a TV broadcasting classic football matches, allowing patrons to relive unforgettable moments from St James’ Park over a pint.
Newcastle is the birthplace of Greggs, so it's only fitting that the pub has opened in the city center.
The city now boasts a total of 20 stores, including one inside the massive Northumberland Street shopping area.
I tried the Golden Flake’s bestsellers to see if Greggs can truly deliver on pub fare.
Best bites
The Golden Flake Tavern’s menu is filled with Greggs’ most popular bakes, reimagined as pub classics.
Featured items include the Chicken Bake Parmo (£11.75), a classic bake topped with cheese sauce and accompanied by potato wedges and coleslaw.
Another favorite is the Mixed Grill (£12.50), served with chunky chips, mushrooms, and tomatoes.
I chose the Greggs pub staple: the Sausage Roll and Mash.
I was impressed by the elegant presentation of the dish.
The sausage roll had been sliced in half and carefully positioned against the mash like a gourmet meal.

With flaky pastry and generous gravy, the dish tasted reminiscent of a gourmet sausage roll.
At just £9, it felt like a steal compared to the price of a high-end pub wellington.
Next, I tried one of the share boards: A Taste of the Golden Flake.
This board was ideal for those wanting a variety, featuring wedges, mac ‘n cheese bites, and a Chicken Bake Parmo.
The board also includes delightful hot honey (perfect for dipping your goujons into) and the best dip I’ve ever tasted.
Both this board and the Greggs Ploughman’s Platter come with a sausage roll – because what’s a visit to Greggs without one?
