The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has attributed the Abuja-Kaduna train accident to human error.
DAILY POST recalls that a passenger train traveling from Abuja to Kaduna derailed on August 16, 2025, causing widespread panic throughout the nation.
NRC Managing Director Kayode Opeifa stated, approximately eight weeks after the incident, that the driver of the unfortunate train exceeded the designated speed limit.
Opeifa made these remarks on Monday during an interview on ‘The Morning Brief,’ a program on Channels Television, where he discussed the accident that raised concerns regarding the safety of the country's railway system.
“Regarding the accident, we found that there was human error involved. Someone simply exceeded the appropriate speed and derailed at that point,” he explained.
“We have a caution order in place; this is the area where the train changes tracks. The speed was excessive,” he added.
When asked for specifics about the exact speed limit that trains are supposed to adhere to, Opeifa declined to provide that information.
“After the derailment, people began contacting us, inquiring about when we would resume operations. They expected us to restore service immediately,” he noted.
