A HUGE blaze has gutted a chicken farm with a massive smoke cloud spotted rising in the sky.

Ten fire crews raced to the inferno in just after 6am this morning with residents urged to keep their doors and windows closed.

Huge plumes of smoke could be seen from miles away as firefighters battled the flames.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue said a major incident was declared this afternoon but this has since been stood down and the emergency response “partially scaled back”.

They added that a joint investigation into the cause of the fire has been launched alongside Cheshire Police.

on the M6 as well as residents in nearby areas such as Betley and Madeley told the BBC they spotted the huge smoke plume.

One driver told the broadcaster: “I saw this enormous smoke trail as I was coming down the M6 so I followed it and ended up at Betley Village Hall.

“I’m just witnessing this huge, huge smoke cloud.”

Another added they could also see an “enormous, black, billowing storm cloud” from the motorway.

They added: “It literally enveloped the whole of the sky above me.”

Cheshire Fire and Service said they were fighting to prevent the flames from spreading on the four-acre farm.

Aaron Collins, area manager for Cheshire Fire and Rescue said in an update this afternoon: “At approximately 06:30am, firefighters were called to a significant fire at an empty chicken shed in Checkley.

“At the height of the incident, ten fire engines from across Cheshire, with support from Staffordshire and Shropshire, alongside a range of specialist appliances, were in attendance.

“Due to the significant smoke plume, a major incident was initially declared, although this has since been stood down.”

He added: “Anyone nearby is advised to continue keeping doors and windows closed if affected by smoke.”
