The Three Lions skipper answered Sommers’ questions but could hardly get his words out, clutching his throat in embarrassment.

Sommers recalled to BBC Sport : “I’ve done a lot of interviews in my career but I don’t think I’ve ever done one with a player that doesn’t have a voice.

“So I’m standing there on the pitch watching all the celebrations. Then we got told that in light of what had happened to Jordan [Henderson], perhaps , as the captain, would speak.

“And then, of course, when he opened his mouth, it quickly became apparent that he was struggling with his voice a little bit.

“The reporter in me just took over and I was like, ‘I’ve just got to keep going here’.

“A couple of people said to me, ‘Why did you keep asking questions?’. I thought, well, his voice is going to come back, and we were both in quite good spirits.”

was cracking up watching it live from the BBC studio in Salford, calling it “the best interview I’ve ever seen”.

She continued: “I ran down the steps into the bowels of the Azteca, Harry Kane re-emerges with a throat sweet in his mouth and says to me, ‘Oh my gosh, my voice is back’.

“He said his phone had absolutely blown up with messages about the match, but also about that interview. He said, ‘My mates think it’s hilarious’.

“He wanted to come and speak again. We said, ‘It’s up to you if you want to do the interview or not’. And he said, ‘No, I’d really like to’.

“I’ve never done an interview that an England captain has asked to do again.

“I think it shows not only that Harry Kane does everything to the highest standards, but also that he’s a good sport and he’s got a good sense of humour.

“It adds to what was probably the best night of my career.”
