A group in Ondo State, Concerned Youths for Good Governance, has taken a swipe at operatives of the state command of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, over the manhandling and brutality perpetrated against some residents of the state.

According to the group, the intimidation and harassment of some sellers of liquefied natural gas, LNG, otherwise known as cooking gas in Akure, by civil defence officials calls for concern.

The position of the group follows a viral video making the rounds on social media where some NSCDC operatives were seen brutalising a man and a woman.

In a statement issued by the chairman of the group, Seyi Ogundipe, the excessive use of force by the operatives amounts to a gross violation of the NSCDC Act as well as the corps’ operational rules.

While demanding immediate disciplinary action against the erring operatives, Ogundipe emphasised that if the corps failed to do the needful, necessary legal action would be taken against it and the officers involved.

β€œLaw enforcement authority is circumscribed by law. Even where enforcement or arrest is justified, due process, proportionality, and restraint are mandatory. The law provides for lawful arrest and sealing of premises, not public humiliation or violence.”

While reacting to the development, the Public Relations Officer of the command, Daniel Aidamenbor, stated that a full-scale investigation has been launched into the incident.

β€œThe State Commandant has zero tolerance for unprofessional conduct. He has, however, directed that a full-scale investigation into the incident be carried out while the officers have been recalled to base for debrief.”
