A coalition from the Southeast, operating under the Igbo National Union-Worldwide (INU-W), has denounced what it describes as rampant destruction of businesses and properties belonging to the Igbo community by the Lagos State Government.
The organization is now requesting immediate intervention from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The group, which aims to safeguard and advocate for the collective interests and welfare of Igbos both locally and abroad, expressed that the actions of the Lagos State Government could heighten ethnic tensions and discord between the Igbo community and the Yoruba nation.
In a press release shared with journalists, the Administrative Secretary of the group, Mazi Austin-Mary Ndukwu, criticized what he referred to as deliberate and calculated demolitions and destruction of properties and businesses owned by Igbo individuals under the current administration of Babatunde Sanwo-Olu.
The organization urged the President to intervene promptly by urging the Lagos State Governor to halt the alleged biased and excessive demolitions and destruction of Igbo businesses and properties.
INU-W called on Sanwo-Olu and other Yoruba leaders, whom it accused of endorsing the alleged targeted demolitions, to reconsider their actions, emphasizing that every region relies on one another for survival.
The group expressed regret that Igbos have been specifically targeted for destruction in Yoruba territory and warned that such behavior cannot be tolerated.
The Lagos State Government should cease its antagonism towards the Igbo community, who significantly contribute to the development of the State.
“We encourage Igbos in Lagos to endure the actions of the Governor, believing that this situation will eventually change,” it stated.
INU-W asserted that it has become evident that “the Lagos State Government is fully intent, albeit under state laws and declarations, on making life difficult for Igbos residing in that State.”
“To exacerbate the situation is the silence of both the Federal Government and Yoruba elites, who seem unconcerned about condemning the actions of the Lagos State Governor to halt the biased and excessive demolitions, which appear to be aimed specifically at Ndigbo, indicating ethnic profiling.
“INU-W is urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to compel the Lagos State Governor and his Yoruba counterparts to change their approach and rectify the already alarming trend against Ndigbo before it escalates into a complete breakdown of law and order,” it cautioned.
