FCT ground rent: Big men are my problem, tell them to pay – Wike urges Tinubu

Published on June 19, 2025 at 05:20 PM

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, on Thursday disclosed that “big men”; are his problem.

Wike disclosed that big men who have refused to pay their taxes and ground rent are part of the problems he’s encountering as minister.

He lamented that these same wealthy people obey the law of foreign countries where they have properties but refuse to replicate the same back home in Nigeria.

He spoke during the commissioning of the newly constructed Collector Road CN2 (Zakari A. Kyari Street) from the Arterial road N11 (Ahmadu Bello Way) in Mabushi to Judges Quarters in Katampe and other roads.

The Minister also charged President Bola Tinubu to educate residents of the capital city on the need to pay ground rent.

He said: “I would say that the problem we are having are the big men, the big men are those who will make sure that they don’t pay taxes.

“These big men, before leaving London have paid their property taxes, before they leave America, they have paid their taxes because they know the consequences.

“But here, they will like to be chased – let there be noise and then they will say give us time. In London and America they don’t say give them time.

“There they don’t say give us time, they will obey but in Nigeria they will find one excuse or the other.

“We thank all those particularly from Rivers State who have been giving us support every day to show that we have not disappointed you. I want to say thank you for the good you have done to show that your son has not disappointed you.

“Let me assure you that we will not disappoint you and Nigerians. On that note I want to invite Mr President ably represented by the Deputy Speaker to do us a favour by talking to us and emphasizing that we should pay our taxes so that we can do more roads.”;
