The Kaduna State Chapter of the Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism Network (PAVE Network) has urged Nigerians to avoid excessive dependence on military solutions for tackling insecurity in the country.
PAVE asserts that lasting peace can only be attained through evidence-based, community-driven initiatives among Nigerians.
Its spokesperson and Coordinator, Eric John, while addressing journalists about the group's activities in Kaduna, assessed the state of violent extremism in Kaduna and the broader North-West region, and outlined ongoing non-kinetic strategies to tackle the issue.
He explained that Kaduna's security landscape is intricate due to its strategic position, persistent communal tensions, conflicts between farmers and herders, as well as the spillover of armed banditry from neighboring states.
He stated, “Extremist and criminal organizations continue to take advantage of forested regions, porous borders, and socio-economic vulnerabilities, especially youth unemployment.”
He elaborated that violent extremism cannot be eradicated solely through force; kinetic methods, if not supplemented by preventive measures, dialogue, and development-oriented strategies, may only address symptoms rather than underlying causes.
The spokesperson emphasized their commitment to what is effective in the long run; focusing on early warning, early response, fostering community trust, and promoting inclusive development. He noted that the PAVE Network has prioritized capacity building and dialogue throughout Kaduna and the North-West.
He pointed out that PAVE has achieved this by uniting government agencies, security forces, traditional leaders, as well as women's and youth groups to collaboratively develop practical State and Local Action Plans on Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (PCVE), stressing that these interactions have enabled communities to express their vulnerabilities and prevention priorities.
John also noted that community resilience campaigns conducted in various localities have enhanced peace education, tolerance messaging, and local networks that counter extremist narratives at the grassroots level.
