A former United States Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Tibor Nagy, has raised fresh international concern over the state of Nigeria’s democracy, warning of potential threats to political competition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Nagy, a veteran diplomat with extensive experience in African affairs, expressed his concerns in a post on his X account, where he drew attention to allegations made by prominent Nigerian human rights lawyer Femi Falana.
“If famed Nigerian human rights lawyer Femi Falana accuses Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress of manipulating the judiciary to try and bring about a one-party state by destroying the opposition, then the world should pay attention. Elections coming in months,” Nagy stated.
The remarks have amplified growing scrutiny from the international community regarding the independence of democratic institutions in Nigeria, particularly the judiciary and electoral system, as political activities gradually build up ahead of the next election cycle.
