The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has responded to the controversy surrounding the resignation of the former Managing Director of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Farouk Ahmed.

According to DAILY POST, Aliko Dangote, the Chairman of the Dangote Group, alleged that Ahmed spent approximately $5 million on the secondary school education of his four children in Switzerland, prompting calls for a thorough investigation and public clarification.

This controversy ultimately led to Ahmed's resignation as the Chief Executive Officer of the NMDPRA.

In his response, Obi emphasized that this revelation highlights the necessity for moral accountability.

He stated, “One of the most discussed public controversies lately is the allegation concerning Farouk Ahmed.
“At current exchange rates, $5 million is roughly N7.5 billion. In a nation with over 18 million out-of-school children—the highest in the world—this revelation inevitably brings forth questions of proportionality, public trust, and moral accountability.

“Education is one of the most significant legacies a parent can provide for their child. No reasonable individual resents parents for investing in their children's future. Plato, in The Republic, reminds us that 'education and upbringing are what create good human beings,' cautioning that neglecting education harms not only individuals but society as a whole.

“Thus, the issue here is not education itself, but rather the scale, context, and moral implications, particularly when such expenditure is associated with a public official in a country marked by extreme inequality.

“With N7.5 billion, it would be feasible to construct 25 school blocks, at N35 million per block, fully encompassing construction, furnishing, and basic learning infrastructure. This totals N875 million in capital expenditure.”
