Former Manchester United star, Owen Hargreaves, has explained how manager Ruben Amorim made Bruno Fernandes miss the penalty in the Red Devils’ 3-1 defeat to Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday.
He believes the miss could have been a result of the Portuguese being started in a deeper midfield role by Amorim.
The Red Devils were beaten 3-1 defeat by Brentford on Saturday in a game they were expected to win having beaten Chelsea the previous weekend.
Ruben Amorim have never won back-to-back games since taking the reins at Old Trafford in November last year.
Brentford netted twice umder 20 minutes with Igor Thiago but Benjamin Sesko pulled one back for the visitors six minutes later.
Fernandes stepped up to take the penalty kick after Bryan Mbeumo was brought down and saw his tame effort saved by goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.
Brentford then made it three in injury time to seal their win.
Fernandes has been used in a deeper midfield role by Ruben Amorim this season.
Hargreaves believes this new role could also have been a factor in his spot kick miss.
“If the goalkeeper just waits as Kelleher does it puts pressure on Bruno under pressure and he ends up just passing it,” Hargreaves told Premier League Productions.
“That’s why I prefer the Harry Kane one where he whips it into the corner.
“You just wonder about Bruno, is that because he is playing in that deeper midfield position? He’s not getting as many touches in the area where he can affect the game.
“Bruno has got to be a 10 again, he’s the best creator, he has got to be a 10 again. Sesko scored which was the only positive for United today.”
