ENGLAND haven’t only got to beat Lionel Messi and Argentina on Wednesday, they have to beat them in their ‘lucky’ away strip.

It has only been worn once so far, when beat 3-1 in the group stages.

prefers both teams to wear their home kits if possible, ideally creating a light-and-dark contrast for TV viewers.

And while there would be an obvious clash with both teams in predominantly white, and with being the ‘home’ team, there is a conspiracy among Argentine journalists that the kit is lucky.

Despite being the ‘away’ team for the match in Atlanta, Argentina requested to wear the second strip anyway.

The shirt is supposedly linked to World Cup wins over England in 1986 and 1998.

In 1986, when scored the ‘Hand of God’ and one of the best World Cup goals in the same match, England were in white and Argentina in blue.

As for 1998, when was infamously sent off, the colours were again the same, with Argentina in their navy away kit.

The match finished 2-2, but it was the South Americans who progressed after a penalty shootout.

The theory is supported by the fact that when England prevailed in Japan in 2002, the Three Lions wore red while La Albiceleste wore the iconic stripes.

Beckham got his revenge in that outing as he netted the only goal of the game from the spot.

There is a blip in the theory with England beating Argentina in their dark blue shirt in 2005.

In something of a good omen for England at least, the Three Lions have NEVER lost to their South American rivals when they have been the ‘home’ team, a record dating back 75 years.
