The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) has launched the second phase of its complimentary prepaid meter distribution under ‘Tranche B’ of the Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF) metering program.

MAF is a metering initiative established by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to address the existing metering gap in the sector and eliminate estimated billing.

The Group Head of Corporate Communications at EEDC, Mr. Emeka Ezeh, announced this in a statement released on Tuesday.

The metering program, supported by the Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF) “Tranche B,” aims to serve unmetered customers on service band “A” feeders throughout the South-East region.

According to Ezeh, a total of 13,335 EEDC customers, including those from its subsidiary companies, will benefit from this phase of the metering program, which commenced on November 2, 2025, with the Know Your Customer (KYC) validation exercise.

He confirmed that the free metering initiative is financed through the Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF) established by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), and customers are not required to pay for the installation of these meters at their premises.

“These meters and their installation are provided at no cost, and customers are advised against making any payments to the meter installers or yielding to any form of inducement or extortion,” Ezeh stated.

“This is in line with our organization’s commitment to enhancing service transparency and customer satisfaction.”

He stressed that this program prioritizes customers under Band “A” feeders and encouraged customers to verify and update their contact details by visiting the Customer Service Unit at the distribution company’s office that serves them.

“Our team will contact customers regarding this metering initiative using the information provided in their profiles with the company,” Ezeh added.

Ezeh noted that earlier this year, EEDC successfully completed “Tranche A” of the MAF metering program, during which 13,614 Band “A” customers were metered.

He assured that once all customers in Band “A” are metered, the focus will shift to those in Band “B,” emphasizing that the goal is to systematically close the existing metering gap across the network.

He further urged customers who will not be included in the current “Tranche B” MAF metering exercise to remain patient, as another metering initiative – the Distribution Sector Recovery Project (DISREP) – is in progress.

He cautioned against bypassing these prepaid meters once installed, as doing so would not only undermine the purpose of the exercise but also jeopardize efforts to enhance efficiency and protect revenue.

“Customers should refrain from engaging in meter bypass, energy theft, and other illegal activities, and they should report anyone involved in such criminal actions.”

It is important to note that last month, NERC approved a N28 billion bailout for Discos for the second phase of MAF.
