A pet insurance company has advised pet owners to refrain from walking their dogs before a certain time this week, as it may be too cold for them.
As temperatures have dropped significantly across much of the country, it’s not just humans who should take precautions.

While every dog is unique, owners are encouraged to walk their dogs during the warmest part of the day, which is typically between 11 AM and 3 PM.
When temperatures drop to around 5°C, smaller and older dogs may start to struggle and may need extra layers, such as a coat or boots.
If the temperature falls to -4°C, it is advisable to skip the walk entirely and wait for warmer weather.
The health risks to dogs increase significantly in extreme cold, exposing them to potential hypothermia, frostbite, and cracked paws, pads, or noses.
If you are uncertain, keep your walk brief or forgo it altogether—especially if your dog can relieve itself in the garden.
Smaller breeds, dogs with thin or short coats, puppies, and senior dogs should spend more time indoors than outdoors during this winter season.
A spokesperson from Pet Health Club stated: “15°C is safe for walking your dog; it’s the ideal temperature. Between 7°C and 4°C, most dogs can be walked; however, small dogs, puppies, or those with thin coats may require a coat.”
Puppies are at an even higher risk of health issues caused by cold weather since they cannot yet regulate their body temperature effectively.
Even a brief walk can pose a danger to a puppy, so it is recommended to avoid taking them outside when temperatures drop below 2°C.
Although rare in the UK, temperatures below -12°C are considered a serious risk for all dogs, meaning outdoor time should be limited to quick toilet breaks.
While larger breeds with thicker fur may handle slightly lower temperatures better, if their coat is wet, wait for it to dry before going outside.
The cold weather is likely to persist for several weeks as we reach the snowy peak of winter. If you’d like some company on your winter walks, consider purchasing a coat with four leg holes.
