Cops have confirmed the cyclist was struck by the unmarked black at around 9pm as it whizzed along Long Lane in Bermondsey, South London, while responding to an emergency call.

Witnesses at the scene said the Volvo appeared to be used by armed officers, while the cyclist is said to have been riding a Lime bike.

One woman, who lives opposite the crash scene, told The Sun it was a “distressing” sight.

She said: “The cyclist was in a very bad way, he looked dead to be honest. It was really grim and distressing to actually see someone in that state.”

She added: “The medics were here within two minutes though, just as well Guy’s Hospital is just around the corner.

“The paramedics were doing work on him for about an hour on the road, it was very chilling really, we all felt pretty helpless.”

The shaken resident said she took an elderly witness into her garden after the woman was left “hyperventilating” by what she had seen.

“I ended up taking an elderly lady who was a witness into my garden, she was in shock and like hyperventilating,” she said

“I had to calm her down, she sat in my garden for about an hour.”

A Met spokesperson confirmed the cyclist, a man in his 30s, was remains in hospital in a life-threatening condition.

They added that no arrests have been made, though the force says an Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) probe into the incident will be carried out.

One local said he stumbled across the aftermath of the crash while walking home from the pub.

He said: “Yesterday evening was lovely. It had been a really warm day and there was a buzz about the streets.

“That was until I walked around the corner and saw a man being given CPR in the road, which was rather sobering to say the least.

“There were lots of shocked people standing around helplessly. Everyone seemed in shock.”

Pictures showed debris strewn across the road following the smash.

Locals told The Sun that the junction is notorious for collisions.

Grace, who works in a nearby cafe, said: “I have noticed multiple accidents here.

“I am only here two days a week and we see collisions here all the time.

“The council needs to seriously do something about it because it is chaos on this corner.

“I don’t know much about what happened last night but I have heard murmurs from customers all morning.

“It sounds really messy and I hope it isn’t as bad as we fear.”

The Met said the cyclist, a man in his 30s, remains in a life-threatening condition in hospital.

The force added that the watchdog has launched an into the crash.

A Met Police spokesperson said: “At around 20:55hrs on Friday, 26 June, an unmarked police car responding to an emergency call collided with a cyclist on Long Lane, Bermondsey.

“The man on the bike, who is in his 30s, was taken to hospital where he remains in a life-threatening condition.

“No arrests have been made and the road is now clear.

“As is standard practice, the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards and the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) have been informed about the incident.

“The IOPC has begun an independent and officers will continue to support them and their enquiries.”
