VENDORS at a renowned market have labeled this year's event as “the worst” in two decades.

Some stallholders reportedly departed early due to low sales.

Over 270 stalls were distributed across 10 locations in Manchester city center, where the Christmas market has been held since 1998.

A large Ferris wheel and ice rink were also present to draw in crowds.

However, this year's event, which began nearly seven weeks ago, has received mixed reviews.

Gareth Kitching, who operates the Porky’s Grill at Piccadilly Gardens, stated that this has been the “worst Christmas market” for his business in 20 years.

“Honestly, it’s mainly due to an oversaturation of options,” he shared with the Manchester Evening News .

“Things are becoming quite diluted – how many bratwurst and loaded options do we really need next to each other?”

The stallholder, who plans to return next year, noted that families are reducing their spending this year, resulting in a significant decline in sales.

He added: “In previous years, a family might have each bought a pork sandwich. Now, they’re sharing a tray and asking for four forks.”

Other vendors reported that some stallholders began packing up to leave early on Sunday, prior to the scheduled closure of the main market stalls on Monday.

Additionally, there have been claims that some traders have struggled to pay their rent this year.

Conversely, other vendors expressed satisfaction with their experiences, with Miki Christi, who operates The Manchester Shop stall at St Ann’s Square, describing this year's event as “truly beautiful.”

Councillor Pat Karney, Manchester Council’s Christmas spokesperson, remarked: “It’s been another wonderful festive season in Manchester, and our Christmas Markets – the best in the country – have drawn millions of visitors.

“They have been bustling since day one.

“Different traders have had varying experiences, but the majority have reported being quite pleased with how this year turned out, and they’re all set to return in 2026.

“The assertion that this year was ‘the worst in 20 years’ comes from just one trader out of 250 – who has already confirmed his return next year.”
