FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem “misses” Christian Horner and wants the axed Red Bull chief back in F1.

Horner, 52, has been kept away from the paddock by a recently expired non-compete clause that was included in the he agreed last summer.

He has been linked with the likes of Alpine, and – and with 14 Championships under his belt, he won’t be short of interest.

Ben Sulayem said in Miami: “We miss him in this sport and I do [miss him]. I keep in touch with him.

“He was good for the team, good for the sport. We would welcome him back, and someone like him will always find his way.

“I always say to him, ‘you talk too much, but you don’t mean anything bad’. He has a clean heart and he wants to come back.

“As I said, I talk to him regularly and I feel he will be back. When he comes back, it will be like he went for a vacation.”

Horner has made no secret of the fact he wants to return to the paddock.

in January: “I feel like I have unfinished business in Formula 1.

“It didn’t finish the way that I would have liked it to finish. But I am not going to come back for just anything. I am only going to come back for something that can win.

“I miss the sport, I miss the people, I miss the team that I built.”

It is thought that Horner would only join a team willing to put an ownership stake on the table.

That, coupled with his ‘winning potential’ requirement, will limit his options.

And Ben Sulayem has hinted that Horner needs to put himself out there more.

He added: “When someone like him has that history behind him, you don’t look at his credibility. People will come to him.

“But also, it has to be both ways, because how do people know that you are interested if you don’t show your interest?

“I don’t give advice. I just give some ideas, but he’s full of knowledge, his record is amazing and I do like him.

“He’s been a character in the sport.”
