The U.S. lawmaker, Riley Moore, who is leading investigations into the alleged ‘genocide of Christians’ in Nigeria, has asserted that President Bola Tinubu is in a challenging situation and is attempting to safeguard his interests.
In an interview on Fox News on Sunday, Moore responded to Tinubu’s recent remarks from earlier this month, in which the President stated that “Nigeria is a country of religious freedom and tolerance with constitutional guarantees to protect citizens of all faiths.”
“Unfortunately, that is entirely untrue; there are states in Nigeria that enforce blasphemy laws, and individuals are currently facing the death penalty for blasphemy against Islam,” Moore explained.
“There is an individual who is presently imprisoned for defending himself against an attack from a Muslim militant of the Fulani tribe.
“He defended himself, and now he is facing the death penalty. Thus, there is significant persecution occurring in Nigeria, and I recognize that President Tinubu is in a difficult position, trying to protect his interests.”
Moore further commented on X: “@officialABAT
claims his government opposes religious persecution. Yet, 12 states have Sharia law, and a Christian is facing the death penalty for defending his farm from a Muslim Fulani militant who repeatedly stabbed him.”
DAILY POST recalls that U.S. President Donald Trump designated Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern a few weeks ago.
The U.S. leader also threatened military action against Nigeria.
Trump cited what he described as ongoing violence against Christians and the Nigerian government's failure to protect religious minorities.
However, the Nigerian government, under Tinubu's leadership, strongly denied the persecution of any religious groups within the country.
