A notable Islamic scholar in Bauchi State, Dan Malikin Bauchi, Alh. Aminu Mohammed, has denounced recent appeals by certain Nigerian Christian activists to abolish Sharia law in the country.
During a press conference in Bauchi, Mohammed characterized the agitation as misguided and unacceptable, asserting that Sharia law does not threaten the unity or stability of the nation.
He emphasized that the strength of Sharia is rooted not only in its judicial provisions but also in its comprehensive moral and legal principles, which advocate for justice, equity, due process, protection of life and property, human dignity, checks on leaders' powers, fair commercial practices, and safeguarding the rights of the vulnerable against the powerful.
According to him, the effort by a faction of Christian activists to undermine Sharia before a joint session of the American Congress was primarily motivated by fear, misinformation, political agendas, and emotional responses rather than facts, historical context, or lived experiences.
“On behalf of practicing Nigerian Muslims, who represent the majority in this country, I unequivocally condemn this action by those Christian groups attempting to foster unnecessary tension between Muslims and Christians,” he stated.
Mohammed recalled a previous occasion where, as he claimed, Christian representatives allegedly misled the US Congress regarding a purported genocide against Christians in Nigeria — an accusation he termed unfounded.
He cautioned that similar attempts to discredit Islam and Sharia law would ultimately be unsuccessful.
“Let the Christian activists understand that Muslims will never acquiesce to a governance system in Nigeria that excludes Sharia, which does not infringe upon the rights of Christians and is clearly safeguarded under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he asserted.
He further clarified that Sharia law, as implemented in Northern Nigeria, applies exclusively to Muslims and has been recognized internationally — including by US legal institutions — as a respected legal tradition.
Mohammed reiterated the importance of respect, informed dialogue, and a balanced understanding of Sharia, emphasizing its constitutional validity, its longstanding record of justice, and its contributions to global civilization and peace.
