CALL The Midwife has revealed a major change to the Christmas special after the heartbreaking series finale.

The drama will not air a festive episode in 2026, with the much-loved series usually delighting viewers in a prime time spot on the TV schedule on .

This Sun previously exclusively reported how bosses were – and that will now take the place of a winter special.

Bosses have now confirmed there won’t be snippets of seasonal greetings from Nonatus House this year and creator and writer Heidi Thomas revealed at a recent press event: “No, there won’t be a Christmas special this Christmas, not in the traditional mould”.

She added: “This is really just a very temporary pause in the usual pattern”.

Instead the prequel, entitled Sisters In Arms, will take centre stage.

It will launch during the Christmas period – meaning viewers will still be able to get their Call The Midwife fix.

Since the prequel is set in , it could feature younger versions of older characters from .

They’re likely to include Fred Buckle, and a trio of nuns – Sister Julienne, Sister Evangelina and Sister Monica Joan – all of whom are known to have been around during the conflict.

Show writer Heidi previously said: “The opening of new doors at Nonnatus House feels profoundly emotional, and yet just right.

“I have never run out of stories for , and I never will.

“But having wept, laughed, and raged my way from 1957 to 1971, I found myself yearning to delve into the deeper past.

“ in the East End were extraordinary – filled with loss, togetherness, courage and joy.

“The bombs fell, the babies kept on coming, and the Sisters kept on going.

“There will be so much in the prequel for our wonderful, loyal fans, including the appearance of some familiar (if much younger!) faces.”
