Authorities have initiated an urgent investigation following the discovery of a woman's body in a river in a tragic incident on New Year’s Day.

Emergency services were summoned to the River Waveney at The Quay after reports of a woman in the water at 8 am today.

Ambulance crews arrived promptly and retrieved the woman, who is believed to be in her 60s, from the river, where she was pronounced dead.

The cause of death is currently being considered unexplained; however, Suffolk Police have stated there is no evidence to suggest any suspicious circumstances.

Police have yet to identify the woman and are requesting assistance from the public to determine her last known movements.

Fishermen reported that officers recovered the body from the water near a flyover bridge, and the area has been cordoned off.

Authorities have confirmed that the Coroner has been notified.

Three police vehicles and a forensics van were observed at the riverside, with police tape blocking off certain sections of a footpath.

A boat owner mentioned that the unfortunate discovery was made in the water right next to their vessel.

One man, who arrived at the site to go fishing, stated: “They brought a body out of the river this morning.

“We got here around 7:30 am, and there was a significant presence of police, fire engines, and ambulances.

“Later on, they put up police tape, and they’re not allowing anyone to pass through.”

Another fisherman remarked: “I heard that they found a body, but I’ve only just arrived, so I don’t know any more than that.”

Suffolk Police have been approached for further comments.
