are thrilled the display, which would have featured eagles, falcons and hawks, has been canned.

It was to take place this month at Hopetown Darlington museum, County Durham.

A spokesman at the attraction said: “While all appropriate welfare, accreditation and safety standards were in place, we have listened to the concerns raised by local campaign groups and have taken the decision to cancel the of prey flying display.”

Darlington Vegans, Freedom for Animals, and North East Animal Rights campaigners sent a series of emails urging the venue not to use living creatures at events.

Darlington Vegans’ Kathy Barley said these displays “force wild animals to perform unnatural behaviour”.

Kathy added: “[We] are delighted to hear the event has been cancelled.

“Rather than promoting a genuine understanding of raptor ecology it reinforces the harmful idea that wildlife exists for human exploitation.”

Freedom for Animals said it is calling for “a more compassionate approach to engaging the public with wildlife”.

It added the cancellation proves “speaking up for animals can make a difference”.
