The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State has lost its sole member in the House of Representatives, Pastor Ojotu Ojema, to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Ojema, who represents the Apa/Agatu Federal Constituency and serves as the Chairman of the House Committee on National Inland Waterways, announced his defection on Thursday, October 9, 2025, during a meeting with PDP executives from Apa/Agatu in Obagaji, Agatu Local Government Area.
He stated that his decision to leave the PDP followed extensive consultations with his family, associates, and constituents, citing significant internal crises within the party from the national level down to the grassroots.
“The PDP has been mired in internal conflicts that have hindered the party's ability to function cohesively. I cannot remain in a system that stifles progress and unity,” Ojema asserted.
The lawmaker emphasized that his transition to the ruling APC was inspired by divine guidance and a commitment to deliver greater development and democratic benefits to his constituents.
“God has instructed me to bring happiness to the people. My achievements in two years are evident throughout Apa and Agatu. I will accomplish even more as a member of the ruling party,” he added.
Ojema expressed gratitude to PDP members for their enduring support and assured that his departure from the party would not diminish his amicable relationships across political lines.
Several PDP leaders, including former Agatu Legislative Leader Hon. Ochokwu Alelu, Agatu LGA PDP Chairman Hon. Sunday Oteyi, Acting Apa LGA PDP Chairman Hon. Oki Saleh, and Mrs. Alima Matthew, commended Ojema’s performance, describing him as a unifying and development-focused leader. They encouraged supporters to stand by him, regardless of party affiliation.
Also commenting, Hon. Prince Antenyi, the legislator’s aide, praised Ojema for his exemplary representation, noting that he had provided livelihoods for thousands of constituents.
“While the people of Apa would love for him to stay in the PDP, they will respect God’s decision,” Antenyi stated, adding that Ojema’s defection would attract greater opportunities for the constituency.
He further urged Agatu residents to join their counterparts in Apa in supporting Ojema’s transition to the APC, describing it as “a promising development for everyone.”
