Step forward resident referee analyst Darren Cann, the record-breaking former official who is setting the record straight.

What is Darren Cann’s refereeing experience?

Norfolk-born Darren hung up his flag in April 2025 after an extraordinary career spanning more than three decades at the very top of the game.

He left the pitch as a true history-maker, having officiated 579 Premier League matches, the most by any match official in the competition’s history.

In total, he has overseen more than 1,000 professional matches domestically and internationally.

Alongside regular partner Howard Webb and fellow assistant Mike Mullarkey, Cann achieved refereeing immortality in 2010.

The trio became the first-ever officiating team to take charge of the Final (Inter Milan vs Bayern Munich) and the World Cup Final (Spain vs Netherlands) in the same season.

Add in Euro 2008, the 2014 World Cup in , and the legendary 2006 “” Final between and , and you have one of the most glittering refereeing CVs on the planet.

Does he have any experience as a player?

Unlike some officials who get stick from fans for “never playing the game,” Cann knows exactly what it feels like out on the turf.

He started out as a promising young apprentice footballer, kicking off in the youth ranks at before being snapped up by Steve Coppell for .

It was at Selhurst Park where Cann played in the exact same Eagles youth team as future boss .

Cann later progressed to play up front alongside and Palace goal-machine .

Though he was released after two seasons and dropped into non-league with Wroxham and Norwich United, his background gave him valuable insights when switching to refereeing in 1991.

What is his role as expert analyst for BBC?

This summer, Cann is bringing all that experience straight to our living rooms for the BBC’s World Cup coverage.

His role is to provide a match-official’s perspective from the studio.

When a controversial call throws the pundits into chaos or leaves fans screaming at the telly, Cann hopes to be the calm voice of reason breaking down the complex laws of the game.

But viewers have already seen him locked in tense debates with presenters, and he’s revealed his phone “blows up” with WhatsApp texts from top referees during matches.
