The 24-year-old attempted to clear out the bank at the UniCredit branch on Viale Certosa, Milan on Thursday night.
In video from inside the vault, the Bangladeshi national can be seen attempting to pry his way into multiple safety deposit boxes.
Without any luck, he eventually gave up and walked back to the door, only to find himself locked in.
After attempting to get out of the vault for a few minutes, the video shows the failed thief resigning himself to his fate and sitting on the ground, waiting to be let out.
A private security company employed by the bank detected the robber inside the vault and raised the alarm with police.
When cops arrived at the bank, the vault was already inaccessible for the day, as the key was secured inside its own timed lockbox – programmed to only open during bank opening hours.
The safebox was set to reopen at 8am the following morning.
After failed attempts to override the timed lock and retrieve the keys, the fire department was called at around 9pm.
It took firefighters nearly nine hours to force the safe open, recovering both the robber, the keys and the vault.
Two ambulance crews also attended the scene.
The man was later arrested by the Carabinieri Mobile Radio Unit for attempted aggravated theft.
An investigation revealed he had entered the bank during opening hours before he managed to get inside the vault.
It remains unclear how he became locked inside.
He sustained no injuries during his time inside the vault; however, he was assessed by attending emergency workers and later taken to hospital for observation.
An investigation into the incident has been launched as the Carabinieri attempt to piece together the ordeal.

In December, a group of German thieves were also caught on camera robbing a bank and in a comedic Christmas heist.
Bizarre footage shows a masked man, dressed in a grey jumper and balaclava, calmly feeding coins into a parking metre, slotting them in one by one.
He then returns moments later to put more money in the machine, making sure he pays the correct amount.
The honest thief remembered to pay up – despite having just fled a German bank vault with a haul estimated at around £30 million.
In a separate clip, another member of the group can seen lifting up the parking barrier for his accomplice in a white Mercedes van.
He then repeats the trick so a black car can enter the complex.
The vehicle is then seen approaching the exit – presumably as the gang make their getaway.
A police spokesperson said: “The videos are known and form part of the ongoing investigation.”
The authorities also revealed the clips were originally shared in a WhatsApp group set up by the victims of the robbery.
The break-in at the bank vault in Gelsenkirchen is believed to have affected around 2,500 customers.
