THIS is the awkward moment a group of backpackers mistakenly gatecrash a Thai funeral thinking it’s a restaurant.

A pair of German tourists were seen entering a private backyard wake in Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand, expecting to dine at an authentic-style Thai restaurant.

The blunder was caught on camera, capturing the moment the grieving but gracious family served them dinner.

Charantorn Chaloemkiad was helping a friend welcome visitors to the traditional Thai wake of a loved one on January 31 when he noticed the Euro duo settle in at a table.

They appeared to be waiting for a menu to be handed to them, unaware that they were surrounded by mourners at the wake.

Moments later, a woman approached and handed them bottles of water before Charantorn walked over to speak with them.

“I went over to speak with them, and they asked if the place was a food court. They had heard about food courts online and wanted to try the food,” he recalled.

“They had wandered over from a nearby night market and followed the smell of the cooking.

“When I told them it wasn’t a restaurant, but actually a funeral, they were mortified. They were very apologetic. However, it was very funny.”

Despite the mishap, the hosts showcased their world-famous Thai hospitality.

The deceased’s sister insisted the pair stay, serving them refreshing iced milk and crispy, golden, deep-fried dough sticks.

The lads finished their meal and thanked the family before leaving the wake.

In Thailand, funerals can last for several days before the final cremation.

During the mourning period, regular prayers are held, and meals or snacks are served to visitors.

Just two days later, a trio of Dutch travellers also wandered in, asking if the restaurant served blended cocktails.

In another clip, the mourning family can be seen serving the trio food and drinks.

Charantorn added: “I explained it was a traditional Southern Thai funeral.”

“The family invited the Dutch visitors to sit and eat with them anyway.

“They were amazed by the gesture and said Thai people are the kindest in the world.”
