The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced on Monday that it has approved a final register of 2,802,790 eligible voters for the governorship election in Anambra scheduled for November 8.
Prof. Joash Amupitan, the Chairman of INEC, made this announcement during the signing of the Peace Accord for the Governorship Off-Cycle Election by the National Peace Committee (NPC) in Awka.
Amupitan also mentioned that the commission has finalized plans for the deployment of 24,000 personnel and election materials across 5,718 polling units, 326 ward collation centers, as well as the 21 local government and state collation centers in Awka.
He reiterated the commission’s commitment to fighting vote-buying during the election.
According to him, any individual or group attempting to undermine the will of the people will face strict legal consequences.
“The Inter-agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) has established comprehensive security measures for this election.
“The Nigeria Police Force will deploy 45,000 personnel, while the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps will assign 10,250 officers, along with support from other agencies.
“Voters should therefore expect a marked improvement in Election Day logistics. Enhanced result management processes will also be noticeable,” he stated.
While reaffirming the commission’s readiness to fulfill its responsibilities, Amupitan urged political parties, candidates, and their supporters to adhere to the principles outlined in the peace accord.
“As the election management body, I want to assure all political parties and candidates that INEC is fully dedicated to executing its duties in accordance with the law, global best practices, and the principles enshrined in the Peace Accord.
“However, I must emphasize that it is not merely the signatures on this document that ensure peace; it is the genuine commitment to upholding its provisions.
“Without peace, logistics will be compromised, our personnel and materials will be at risk, and ultimately, the credibility of the electoral process will be jeopardized.
“Therefore, as you sign this document today, please ensure that this message reaches your supporters at all levels. This is the best way to honor the sacrifice and efforts of the NPC in promoting peaceful elections,” he concluded.
