The coach of Nigeria for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, Eric Chelle, has explained his reasoning for bringing on players such as Moses Simon, Chidera Ejuke, and Chidozie Awaziem in the final moments of the match against Tunisia on Saturday.
The Super Eagles emerged victorious, winning 3-2 against Tunisia in their second group match of the tournament.
The Malian coach opted to introduce Awaziem, Simon, and Ejuke at a time when many would have preferred to see defensive players come on to secure the Super Eagles' 3-1 lead.
Chelle stated to reporters after the match that his decision was based on tactics and the flow of the game.
He remarked, “My choice of substitutions depends on what occurs on the pitch. As I mentioned, we maintained high pressure for 75 minutes during the match."
He added that there was no way the starting players could sustain that level of pressure for the full 90 minutes, stating, “You cannot maintain high pressure for 60 or 90 minutes.”
Nigeria has become the second team to advance to the knockout stages of the tournament, joining Egypt, who earlier qualified by defeating South Africa 1-0.
