Colin Udoh, an insider with the Super Eagles of Nigeria, has clarified the reason behind the substitution of the team’s star player, Victor Osimhen, at halftime during their loss to DR Congo in Rabat on Sunday.

Nigeria was unable to qualify for the World Cup for the second consecutive time, losing 4-3 on penalties to the Congolese team.

Supporters of the Super Eagles were taken aback when Osimhen did not return for the second half and was replaced by Sevilla striker, Akor Adams.

Osimhen has been a key player for the team during the qualifiers, having scored five goals in their last two matches prior to this challenging game.

Following the departure of the Galatasaray striker from the field, the Leopards took control of the match, dominating the play and ultimately eliminating Eric Chelle’s squad from World Cup contention.

Udoh informed ESPN that the former Napoli striker had sustained a hamstring injury.

“He was substituted at halftime. I received a call from the team and learned that he had a hamstring issue, which is why he was taken off at halftime,” he said.

“Whenever Osimhen has played and either scored or assisted, Nigeria has never lost a match. The moment he went off at halftime, I sensed that something significant was about to happen. Unfortunately, that’s the reality.”

Nigeria will now shift its focus to preparing for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, which is scheduled for December.
