The Yoruba Council Worldwide and the Nigeria Coalition Group have urged President Bola Tinubu to disregard calls for an extension of the implementation of the 15% import duty tax tariffs on petroleum products.
During a protest in Lagos on Tuesday, the coalition insisted on the immediate enactment of the import duty tax tariffs.
They also called for a complete ban on the importation of premium motor spirit, commonly known as petrol, and automotive gas oil (AGO), without any further delay.
The protesters believe that this action would significantly contribute to the rapid growth of the nation's economy and encourage more Nigerians to launch indigenous companies.
The coalition reported that some oil marketers in the country are lobbying for an extension of the new tariff implementation until the end of the first quarter of 2026.
They condemned this initiative as “a harmful and deceitful agenda designed to perpetuate the suffering and impoverishment of Nigerians.”
During the protest, the Nigeria Coalition Group and Yoruba Council Worldwide submitted a joint letter of demand to the Executive Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa.
They urged the government and those responsible for the nation’s crude oil to prioritize supplying indigenous refineries before considering exportation, emphasizing that this aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The protest took place on Wednesday morning at the entrance of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos, featuring participants from various prominent civil society organizations, including NULAS, NANS, NAPS, student union bodies, OPC, Agbekoya, Arewa Youths Groups, and Ohanaeze Ndigbo Parliament Worldwide.
The leadership of the Nigeria Coalition Group and Yoruba Council Worldwide encouraged all Nigerians to consistently support what they consider noble causes.
